A fewwords about us

Let's tell you a little about Carl Nielsen restaurant with Danish open sandwiches
Restaurant Carl Nielsen got its name because the well-known composer Carl Nielsen lived in Toldbodgade 5 in 1906

Our lunch restaurant has traditional Danish open sandwiches with a modern twist on the menu.

The quality is high and, we make everything from scratch.

We have three Carl Nielsen signature dishes with inspiration from the composer's works.

Our ambition is to provide a total guest experience, so you feel comfortable when you sit in our restaurant and eat the most delicious open sandwiches accompanied by beer, schnapps, wine, juice or soda.

How it all started….

In December 2019, John & Li's restaurant visited Amalie, which at that time had rented the premises at Toldbodgade 5, while their own restaurant was renovated.

When they sat in the old, quirky and absolutely amazing restaurant, it was almost love at first sight.

Lis investigated the history behind the old building, where it emerged that the Danish composer Carl August Nielsen had lived in the building.

Carl Nielsen made his debut at Tivoli, so it was obvious that Normann Copenhagen's Tivoli series, which is inspired by the garden's many lamps, should be used.

We have chosen to honor Carl Nielsen by making signature dishes inspired by his works. Very strangely, Maskarade was premiered in 1906, where he lived in the building.

At one point, Carl Nielsen had heart problems, and his doctor recommended him a quiet pastime - and that was knitting.

Carl Nielsen knitted dishcloths with red edges. It has inspired us to knit towels for our toilets.

John's mother, Yrsa Holm Kristensen, have knitted our towels.

To make the dream of a lunch restaurant come true, we can greatly thank Steen Lyngfeldt for. He has been a great inspirer and a great help.
